A lot of students have been wondering what the posters around the school saying Day without Desk’s are all about. This year will be Palisade’s first year participating and hopefully it will become more well known.

The event began at Central High School four years ago. Getting all the district high schools involved would be ideal, and this year Palisade is making it a little closer to possible. As of last year GJHS, R-5, and Central were the only schools that participated in the fundraiser.

“One of my best friends, Nikka Wolf is the head of the event. She tried to contact the administrators but none of them were getting back to her so since I was in student council I agreed to take it on here at Palisade,” said senior Sarah Kem.

This event consists of students sitting on the floor all day to understand how many students around the world have to learn. This year all the proceeds will be going to Escola Muncipal Professor Renato Azevedo, a school with physically and mentally disabled children in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Every year the proceeds go to a new place, which is chosen by a student at Central. It has to be a place they are passionate about. In the past it has gone to Haiti, Uganda, and one other place,” said Kem

The event will be taking place on Wednesday, April 25th, 2012. Along with sitting on the floor, “DWD t-shirts” will be sold in order to promote and raise money. In addition volunteers will be collecting donations all day of the event.

“I would love for the event to become an annual thing here at Palisade,” said Kem.

Interview with Andrew Bowles on baseball

Since spring has arrived and temperatures have been rising so have the scores at the baseball games. Junior Jackson Shaw said, “We have had a great season so far, right now we are six and two and hope to continue scoring a lot more games.”

Some of you may think that track is just running but there is also the field aspect of track, Sophomore, Leo Gallegos, said, “ My season in throwing is going pretty good. The rest of the throwers are doing good too. Every meet the throwers throw further and further.”

As the seniors finish their sports seasons the young athletes have to step up in their place, Junior, Ryan Schoeber said, “ We have a younger team this year and a lot of great athletes, our team has nowhere else to go but forward.”

With summer approaching fall athletes need to start preparing for fall sports, Athletic Secretary Maria Millard said, “ The most important thing (for an athlete to do to start preparing for fall sports) is to fill out the paper work and to check the online sites for camps, there is the palisade site or the athletic site which is palisadeathletics.org.”

With the baseball boys being 10-2 they hopefully continue with their winning streak at Moffat, Saturday 21st of April. The boys will play at 11 am and at 1pm.

Track and field have been working very hard this season and deserve some support. The next home meet is at Lincoln Park on May fourth at four p.m.

Senior, Chad McGillivary has been working really hard this season he said, “ My track season has been going fairly decent because I have gotten new personal record. The competition is great as well. My next meet is Saturday at Heritage high school.”

The next boys varsity baseball is on May 1st @ Canyon View 4p.m. Let’s keep winning games, baseball boys.

by Abby Bridgett (Section Edtior)

During the weekend of February 25th the PHS Debate team astounded the judges at the Durango High School competition. Three students qualified for the State Competition and four students received alternates. According to freshmen Tiana Menon, one of the State qualifiers, “The whole team did very well; we all either qualified or got an alternate.”

Menon was awarded 4th place in Foreign Extempt. “Foreign Extemp is when you draw a random question [like ‘what steps does Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi need to take to fix Yemen?’] about the world’s events and you must give a seven minute speech on it with 30 min of prep without usage the of internet. [As resources] You can use previous knowledge and articles that you bring in,” said Menon.

Not only was this a gratifying experience for Menon, but also for her teammate Freshmen Talitha Costello, who qualified for State with 4th place in poetry.

“Poetry is essentially when you memorize 7-10 minutes of poetry and then reiterate in with emotions and feeling to a panel of judges,” said Menon.

Costello’s thoughts were quite enthusiastic. “I was rather happy, especially when I got my ballot back from the judges, because they actually understood my poem. Usually they think they are boring,” said Costello. Poetry is subjective and the quality is difficult to judge; it’s in the eyes of the beholder.

Let’s not forget about our alternates. “Greer and Kennedy are ranked as alternates and essentially that means that if one of the kids that are set to go to state decides to drop out, they take our place,” said Menon.

Rising to the top with a 4-0 record, “[Junior Micah Costello] Micah did really well, he got first place,” said Talitha Costello. Some may say biased, but come on…numbers never lie. Micah got first place in the Lincoln Douglas Debate category, or as some call it LD.

“LD is one on one debate with regards to morals and the debates are power matched so the better/ more you win, the harder your opponent will be,” said Menon.

by Abrielle Watson (Staff Writer)

Young passion for the community doesn’t mean small passion. Some students are making a big difference right now, through clubs and in community service.

“In Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) family is the focus. We do community service such as trick-or-treating for canned goods. We also bought presents for two families in need and made care packages for the homeless. Our planning is during school but the services we do are not during school hours,” said club leader Linda Motz.

Although they are young the students are happy to serve the community and out others above themselves. They are happy to make a difference and glad that they are in the FCCLA club

“We are working on a project that will help out the community. We are making a PowerPoint to take to the middle school. [If I could] I would change it so I had more time in it the class. It is really self-fulfilling. It is worth the time that it takes and we don’t do anything on weekends” said freshmen Chania Dunham.

These students are becoming passionate about making a difference.

“Me and my friends wanted to be in the same club and decided FCCLA would be fun. I wish that the club was bigger but other than that I wouldn’t change a thing. [I like that]We never do anything for our benefit, but we have fun” said freshmen Chasity Cerna.

This goes to show that you do not need to have a lot of time to make a difference, just commitment and hard work. With friends you can make it enjoyable. No one said making a difference was a chore, and it doesn’t have to be boring, if you have the right attitude.

When people play games some of the time, it is stealing from their most-of-the-time life and breaking that habit can make anyone a whole lot happier. Most people use gaming as some-of-the-time life to get them to be happier but others have a different perspective on their gaming for their most-of-the-time life.

To some gaming is a way of life, it is all they do is sit at home at their parents’ house. For some as creators or testers gaming is what they do and get paid for it. “I used to play games for hours when the call of Duty games came out but now I play barley any games at all,” said sophomore Sam Urenda.

Gaming does have some good benefits though. Anyone can make a career in gaming. There are all kinds of jobs people can be from testing the game to being someone who watches online for hackers and viruses people put into games online to designing the game that many people will buy and log hours on the game playing. It defiantly shows that people like to play games if they can build a game. “The games now bore me and I want to make my own video game, “said Urenda.

Everyone has played games and as Americans and with the rest of the world like to play games to escape the real world and into a world where anything can be possible. “Playing video games is a way to have fun and a way to dominate the competition all over the world,” said Urenda.

Gaming is a way to make a lot of money just off the games alone. When people see a trailer of preview on a new game people go crazy. “I think the U.S spends over 4 million dollars a year on just games alone,” said senior Nick Nelsen.

Some people play games for other reason besides just to play against competition, some people play it to meet new people around the world or be able to win money. For example, on the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, people play for actual money and real prizes. The last person that won the competition won 1 million dollars. Others play to get anger out, “I play games so I can get frustration out on Call of Duty to kill everyone in the game,” said senior Luis Medrano.

Most people like to game on many different consoles but some people only like a specific console. There are many consoles from the Atari to an Xbox 360 to hand held like the PSP. Over the years the consoles have been coming more and more obsolete in the technology run of the era. “I like to play on Xbox 360 cause every other console sucks compared to it,” said Urenda.

There are all kinds of games that people play; there is racing, first person, RPG (role play games), strategy, third person, puzzles, and lifestyle games. This way there is game appealing to everyone “I like to play first person games and strategy games,” said Nelsen.

Everybody has passion for their country but not as much as a person who has actually served in the military or who is going to serve. People can choose from the National Guard, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and the Air Force like the graduated student, Josh Russell chose.

“I enlisted in the Air Force because it’s an experience I will never get the chance anywhere else,” said Josh Russell.

“No it wasn’t the first branch I thought of. I wanted to go to the Marine Corps, I mean who wouldn’t wanna be a Marine? But then I started thinking about an education and decided that the Air Force would be a better choice for that,” said Russell.

His job that he got selected for is . Russell’s boot camp date is May 29. Russell had started thinking about enlisting in seventh grade so that he can serve his country and have the military pay for his college.

Principal Matt Diers didn’t start thinking about the military seriously until his senior year. “I enlisted because at the time, college wasn’t for me and the Marine Corps physical aspects challenged me and it was a way for me to leave home, have a pay check, and see the world,” said Principal Diers.

Principal Matt Diers was enlisted for four years and was just a regular grunt rifleman. Diers actually wanted to become a helicopter pilot but when he went to re-up after his four years, he found out he was almost deaf in his left ear so he was discharged.

Trevor Talbott is thinking about enlisting in the United States Marine Corps because, “I wanna prove to myself that I can be the best of the best and earn the eagle, globe, and anchor every step of the way,” said Talbott.

“Hell yeah the Marine Corps was my first choice because they’re the most feared and respected of all the military but I give props to the Navy,” said Talbott.

There are many jobs that people can choose from in the Corps. Talbott said, “I want to become a Scout/Sniper but if I can’t make it as a sniper I want to do something in mechanics.”

Talbott is not quite sure yet if he wants to make it a career if he decides to sign, “I want to see where the Corps will take me. If I get a chance to go to college and have the military pay for it, I’m going to take it but if I love the job I have I want it to be a career.

Trevor Talbott started thinking about the military when he was a freshman and got sold on the Marine Corps.

A lot of people have passion for their country but the biggest patriots of all are the military personnel and the people who want to serve in the military.

The tables were practically overflowing with items. Everything from sports gear, to signed guitars adorned the tables. To an outsider, this might look like a simple fundraiser for the school booster club, but ask anyone roaming the halls at PHS, and it was more than just a silent auction. The money raised went to a student or two as a scholarship. However, the meaning is deeper too. His picture, #22, rested on the table as well. It’s a picture of Gabe Hellman, who would have been a senior this year, despite a tragic fishing accident during the summer.

Usually, this story is not talked about around the halls too much. However tonight, the basketball game going on just feet away from the fundraiser is a safe haven for remembering an old friend. Hellman’s parents, both teachers at Palisade, wanted to do something to make the passing of their son not such a dark area.

“This will hopefully give a kid or two each year a scholarship, because I know the Hellman family wanted to do something positive in Gabe’s name, and this was the best Idea we could come up with,” said teacher Glenn Fitzgibbons, who organized the silent auction.

This basketball game might have been a huge rivalry, but the players were not completely consumed with the game. Before the varsity game, senior Caleb Hall, crying, gave a hug to Gabe’s Father, teacher Steve Hellman on the court. Although most of the action was on the court, the real story was just outside the gym.

“What I expected, I was thinking only 20 items, but I now have 70 items. I was thinking about $2000, but it might be $5,000; it exceeded all of my expectations,” said Fitzgibbons.

The scholarship is going to a male or female basketball or baseball player this year. The students selected will be honored with the Gabe Hellman Memorial Scholarship Fund. However, for many, just being able to see their friend remembered by so many for one night was better than any scholarship.
